Updated for Summer 2023

Frequently asked questions about camp programs, cancellations, refunds, re-scheduling, and activities impacted by COVID-19

In the 10 days prior to your camper’s arrival date:

  • Avoid large gatherings in indoor spaces.
  • Take and record their temperature for 10 days before camp arrival.
  • Screen for the presence of symptoms (fever of 100.4 °F or greater, cough, shortness of breath, diarrhea, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, nausea, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, vomiting, etc.)
    • If symptomatic, isolate and test. If your camper tests positive during this time frame, please reach out to camp.
    • Please note that it is also ideal to have your camper tested for COVID-19 3-5 days prior to their arrival to space camp even if asymptomatic.
  • If your camper has been in close contact with a person who has been diagnosed with, tested for, or quarantined as a result of COVID-19, please reach out to camp.
  • Remain vigilant during travel by using precautionary measures such as masking, social distancing, and practicing hand hygiene.

  • What programs will run?
    • We will run the following weeklong, overnight camps at normal pre-Covid-19 capacity: Space Camp, Space Academy, Advanced Space Academy, Aviation Challenge Mach I, Mach II, Mach III, Space Camp Robotics, U.S. Cyber Academy and U.S. Advanced Cyber Academy.
  • Is Early Arrival or Late Departure an option?
    • Yes, but it is limited only to students who fly into the Huntsville International Airport and have purchased airport ground transportation through us.
  • What safety protocols are in place in response to COVID-19?
    • We will continue to review the guidance provided by the CDC regarding the safe operation of camps and will make adjustments where deemed appropriate.
  • Will you require face masks?
    • Masks are an option for campers and staff members. If the camper is immunocompromised or at high risk for severe disease, it is suggested that you contact your healthcare provider for guidance on whether they need to wear a mask and take other necessary precautions. Face shields are not allowed as a replacement for a mask but may be worn in addition to a mask.
    • Masks may be required indoors if warranted due to the exposure to a COVID-19-positive or symptomatic person.
  • What if my child loses a mask or it breaks?
    • Space Camp will provide a disposable replacement mask.
  • How about bed linens?
    • Bed linens are not provided. Please bring your own freshly laundered twin sheets and a blanket. Pillows are provided.
  • What changes will take place for mealtimes?
    • Mealtimes will be staggered to limit capacity in the cafeteria at one time.
    • We continue to review guidance from our local and state health departments and will adjust accordingly.
  • Have any camp activities or curricula been changed?
    • Sharing of supplies is avoided where possible during an activity and are sanitized between use.
    • For Advanced Space Academy, SCUBA gear will be sanitized using methods recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and the Divers Alert Network.
  • How does nursing operate?
  • What happens if my child becomes ill during camp?
    • A camper with a fever of 100.4 OR COVID-like symptoms will be sent home.
    • Campers will not be sent offsite for COVID testing or medical evaluation unless urgent or nursing judgment deems the situation is necessary or the issue is clearly not related to an acute illness (twisted ankle, etc).
    • If a camper is sent home, an authorized parent/guardian/emergency contact should be in route within 8 hours of decampment notification.
    • If decamped due to illness or COVID exposure, our sales team will reach out to you to evaluate your options for rebooking or credit.
  • What happens if my child is exposed to a COVID-positive camper, staff member or Rocket Center visitor while at camp?
    • Space Camp will follow the guidance provided by the CDC and American Camps Association as follows:
      • If the camper has been exposed to COVID-19 and has no symptoms, he or she is welcome to remain at camp and will have to wear a high-quality mask while indoors per CDC guidance. This is regardless of vaccination status.
      • Campers or staff members with COVID-19 symptoms are required to leave camp for the required isolation period regardless of vaccination status.
  • What if someone in contact with my camper presents with COVID-19 symptoms?
    • If anyone in contact with my camper (teammates or staff in close contact) presents with symptoms, the team will be asked to mask indoors for the remainder of the session to reduce the risk of spread.
  • What should I expect at Check In?
    • Attendees in each camp program will receive a specific check-in window and location. You will receive this information by email 14 and 7 days prior to your camp start date.
    • Please do not arrive early as the times are set to expedite the process of checking in hundreds of campers.
